Toilers of the Sea is a novel written by French author Victor Hugo and first published in 1866. The story is set on the island of Guernsey and follows the life of a fisherman named Gilliatt who is determined to save the life of a shipwrecked woman he has fallen in love with. However, his efforts are hindered by the dangerous sea creatures that inhabit the surrounding waters, as well as by the treacherous currents and storms that constantly threaten his life.The novel explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the struggle between man and nature. It is also a commentary on the social and political issues of the time, including the struggle for independence and the conflict between the working class and the wealthy elite.Toilers of the Sea is considered one of Hugo's greatest works, and is often compared to his other famous novel, Les Mis¿¿¿¿¿rables.
