Literature Review from the year 2018 in the subject Public safety and order, disaster control, Mississippi State University, course: CJ 610, language: English, abstract: Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast region of the United States. It was one of the largest and costliest natural disaster in modern history. Under the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and according to the Secretary of Homeland Security at the time, Michael Chertoff it was first real test for the newly developed National Response Plan. Specifically, the three states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana were the main recipients of the hurricane's destructive forces. The cost of this natural disaster was very substantial in more ways than just financially for these affected areas. This natural disaster cost many individuals their homes, way of life, and in numerous cases their actual lives.
