Knygos aprašymas

The Portygee is a novel written by Joseph C. Lincoln. It tells the story of a Portuguese sailor named Manuel Silva who arrives in a small coastal town in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Manuel is looking for work and a new life, but he faces discrimination and suspicion from the locals who refer to him as ""Portygee"". Despite this, Manuel manages to find work as a handyman for a wealthy family and becomes involved in their affairs. Along the way, he falls in love with the family's daughter, Ruth, and faces challenges from her disapproving father and a jealous suitor. The novel explores themes of prejudice, love, and acceptance as Manuel tries to find his place in a new community. As a matter of fact he was not very hungry. Breakfast was always a more or less perfunctory meal with him. But he was surprised to see the variety of eatables upon that table. There were cookies there, and doughnuts, and even half an apple pie. Pie for breakfast! It had been a newspaper joke at which he had laughed many times. But it seemed not to be a joke here, rather a solemn reality. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
