The peculiar imagery of the Kingston slums is cast against a background of violence, religion and politics as the gangs waged war in the city. The violence spun out of control when some politicians exploited it for personal benefit. Counter measures by the authorities proved ineffective in stopping the spread of disorder. The effort of the town's revivalist preacher to shield some of the neighborhood's youth from the carnage that engulfed the city proved mildly successful.
