It is difficult to imagine; nevertheless, until the beginning of the last century (author's note - the nineteenth century) there had been not a single proper road from Prussia to the Memelland. The only road existing was the one used once upon a time by the Sambians and Samogitians during their struggle with the Teutonic Knights, in other words, it was the road that ran from Memel to Königsberg through the Curonian [Spit]. Geography has always made reliable communications over land on the Curonian Spit important. Until the seventeenth century the Nemunas delta had been water and swamps that could be traversed only during the winter. Thus, for centuries the Curonian Spit was the shortest and relatively easiest route. It was, first, a road of war, used by the Lithuanians and the Curonians to travel to and from the Prussian lands.
