1885. Lewes, English philosopher, critic, dramatist, scientist. He is remembered for his theory of metaphysical development of positivism and for his liaison with the English novelist Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot). Lewes's first important contribution to the history of philosophy was his Biographical History of Philosophy. A popularizing work written in a lively and lucid style and aimed at the interested layperson, the book traces the main directions of philosophy from the Greeks to Auguste Comte.
