Anti-inflammatory and bone stimulating properties are the actions of statins that could positively affect periodontitis. The osteogenic effect of statins is of importance in regenerating periodontal defects, especially hard tissue regeneration. More over statin use have been found to be associated with decreasing rate of tooth loss in chronic periodontitis patients.Periodontitis is a complex infectious disease with several etiologic and contributory factors. Periodontal disease occurs as a consequence of the host immune inflammatory response to oral pathogens. Periodontitis as an inflammatory disease occurring adjacent to bone, leads to bone resorption, creating bony defects that may cause tooth loss. Statins were primarily approved as lipid lowering agent to prevent cardiovascular events. Anti-inflammatory and bone stimulating properties are the actions of statins that could positively affect periodontitis.
