Medicinal plants constitute a source of raw materials for both traditional systems of medicine (e.g. Ayurvedic, Chinese, Unani, Homeopathy and Siddha) and modern medicine. Nowadays, plant materials are employed throughout the industrialized and developing world as home remedies, over-the-counter drugs and ingredients for the pharmaceutical industry. Phyto-pharmaceuticals are always mixtures of many constituents and are therefore very variable and difficult to characterize. The active principle(s) in phyto-pharmaceuticals are not always known. The quality criteria for herbal drugs are based on a clear scientific definition of the raw material. To knowledge, no analytical work has been reported for evaluation and standardization of Bilva churna. Or else, individual constituents of Bilva churna have been evaluated. Therefore, we have created a new new analytical method for evaluation of Bilva churna.
