Excerpt: Ph¿ Lý is the capital city of Ha Nam province of Vietnam about thirty five miles south of Hanoi on the river ¿áy. Ph¿ Lý was taken by the French canonnière l'Espingole and 28 men captained by Adrien-Paul Balny d'Avricourt on 26 October 1873, shortly before Balny's death together with Francis Garnier at Hanoi's West Gate. In the aftermath of World War II, Ph¿ Lý was where a significant number of VNQD¿ leaders were captured by the Viet Cong in 1946. It was also where the retreating French forces launched attacks on June 30 1954. The town was almost completely destroyed in five days of bombing between July 14 and November 5, 1966. B¿c Ninh () is a city in the northern part of Vietnam and is the capital of Bac Ninh Province. The city is the cultural, administrative, and commercial center of the province. The city area is 80.82 square km, with a population of 150,331 (2006). In January, 2006, the town (th¿ xã) of Bac Ninh was upgraded to city (thành ph¿). The city's name (¿¿ "northern serenity") is derived from Sino-Vietnamese. In March 1884, Bac Ninh was the site of the decisive Bac Ninh campaign in the wars between France and assorted Black Flag Army forces. The town fell to the French in March 1884. The land of the Bac Ninh Citadel, within Yen, Niem and Do Villages, was occupied by French troops. An ambush of French troops by the Viet Minh occurred at Bac Ninh while the 1946 Fontainebleau Conference was ongoing.
