In order to restore the missing tooth, treatment modality was needed which did not cause the damage to the any other tooth and to underlying structures. It should also provide stability to the prostheses, perform masticatory function to near normal limits, provide adequate comfort and should be esthetically pleasing for the patient.To achieve these objectives many scientists tried implanting different materials on to the surface of bone or into the bone but all this proved inconclusive until the accidental discovery of the phenomenon of osseointegration.This lead to the genesis of concept of dental implants.
