For the periodontium to remain healthy, restorations must be critically managed in several areas so that they are in harmony with their surrounding periodontal tissues. A healthy coexistence between dental restorations and their surrounding structures should be the goal of the conscientious dentist and the expectation of the informed patient. Clinicians need to combine periodontal and restorative procedures in co-ordinated manner to optimize the best clinical outcome. Indeed, a carefully constructed interdisciplinary approach, with accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment planning serves as corner stone in providing a holistic care to the patient. Tissue management is of utmost importance and the real basis on which to determine whether restoration has been properly fabricated and integrated in the mouth of a patient. This can be achieved only through attention to detail and the allowance of an appropriate amount of time to carry out every single procedure. Restorations should be planned for and constructed in line with the principles that ensure soft-tissue health. Regular recalls will provide the opportunity review and early detection and treatment of failures.
