The Predynastic age (approximately the fifth and fourth millenniums BCE) is the period in Egyptian history before the unification of Upper (southern) and Lower (northern) Egypt. The main archaeological cultures of this period are called Badari (c.4400-c.4000 BC) and Naqada (c.4000-c.3000 BCE). In the 4400-4000 period (that of the Badarian culture), the first evidence of agriculture in Upper (southern) Egypt is found. More important, remains from the grave-sites indicate the first evidence of inequality. Not only are there differences in the amount and type of grave goods found, including hammered copper, but graves of the wealthier inhabitants are physically separated from the more numerous resting-places of the majority. "This clearly indicates social stratification which still seems limited at this point in Egyptian prehistory, but which became increasingly important throughout the subsequent Naqada period".
