This textbook is designet for the teaching of Lithuanian to adult foreign students. The course attempts to give the student a sound knowledge of the essentials of both spoken and written Lithuanian and take him well on the way to a mastery of literary Lithuanian.
In preparing the textbook, we especially had in mind students of Lithuanian descent who wish to improve their Lithuanian. We do hope that language scholars specializing in Baltic linguistics will also find the book useful.
The textbook consists of an introduction, 21 lessons and a grammatical appendix. Each lesson has a section on phonetics, a section on grammar, a text, accompanied by vocabulary notes, exercises and conversations. The textbook has been designed as a complete course of study for an intensive program of approximately 90 hours, but it may be covered in a shorter time.
For the convenience of the student, the texts are provided with rather copious vocabulary notes: practically all the words or constructions are given their grammatical characteristic and are translated into English. Thus the textbook can be used for both classroom instruction and independent study.
