Although medical terms have been drawn from many languages, a large majority are from Greek and Latin. It is estimated that about three-fourth of our medical terminology is of Greek origin. The main reason for this is that the Greeks were the founders of rational medicine in the golden age of Greek civilization in the 5th century B.C. The Hippocratic School, later on, Galen (the Greek from Asia Minor who lived in Rome in the 2nd century A.D.) formulated the theories which dominated medicine for long. The Greek terms came into the English and other languages through the Latin. Many medical terms are a mixture of Greek and Latin, and it would be difficult, if not impossible, to replace them. The classical roots form an international language, easily understood by anyone familiar with the subject matter. The knowledge of the meaning of roots, prefixes, and suffixes of Greek and Latin origin enables the student to analyse the medical terms into component parts and to make the new terms easily. This is the greatest aid in learning to understand and to use actively the vocabulary of medicine.
