Its gross irrigated area of 8.26 hectares (21.56 crore acres) is the largest in the world. India has grown to become among the top three global producers of a broad range of crops, including wheat, rice, pulses, cotton, peanuts, fruits, and vegetables (CSO, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, GOI, 2013). India has world second largest population 121 billion which is about 17.5 percent of the world population (Ministry of Home Affairs, Census of India, 2011). About 54.0 percent of work force still depends on Agriculture for their livelihood (Kapila, 2015).
