Since almost no resistance was to be expected, piracy developed into a lucrative sideline for human traffickers in Nigeria, controlled modern slavery from Nigeria via Niger, through the Sahara to the Libyan coast and from there across the Mediterranean to Europe. The pirates - most likely from the Nigerian mafia the ' Black Axe ' controlled - operated with a new concept. They hijacked a freighter and kidnapped the captain and some of the ship's officers. The shipowner, unwilling to be blackmailed, hired Tom Sinistro to rescue his officers from the mafia pirates.
