High-Fidelity Modeling of Boiler Feed Pump Systems for Low-Load Analysis

Optimizing coal-fired power plants for efficient operation at minimum generation levels presents a significant challenge. A key component impacting efficiency is the boiler feed pump system, responsible for delivering water to the boiler. This system often utilizes boiler feed pump turbines (BFPTs) powered by steam bled from the main turbine. However, ensuring stable and efficient operation of BFPTs at low loads can be difficult. This research tackles this challenge by employing high-fidelity modeling. Using specialized software like Flownex, a highly accurate digital replica of a typical boiler feed pump system will be created. This model will encompass not only the BFPT itself, but also its associated steam feed pump, standby electric feed pumps, and the surrounding environment like steam admission valves and condenser back pressure. By analyzing this model under various operating conditions, researchers can gain valuable insights into the behavior of BFPTs at low loads. Case studies will explore the impact of different steam supply conditions, valve control strategies, and leak-off valve philosophies. These simulations will provide valuable predictions and recommendations for optimizing BFPT operation at low loads, ultimately improving the overall efficiency and cost-effectiveness of coal-fired power plants.
