In the academic literature, supply chain management related decisions can be classified in three broad categories: Strategic, Tactical and Operational. Out of these three, strategic decisions are long term in nature and have highest impact on supply chain success/failure. In particular, US and European countries are taking big steps to make their supply chain more sustainable. However, South Asia countries like India, China are still in the process of deriving appropriate response to this enormous sustainability challenge. Moreover due to increasing globalization and technology advancement, it is becoming increasingly vital for Indian manufacturing industry to implement sustainable supply chain initiatives to capitalize on economic gains and become lean in the process. Implementing Sustainability initiatives in the supply chain is a haunting task. This crucial area for manufacturing industry supply chain of developing nations can be well understood by a systematic approach followed in this study. The critical factors for implementations of sustainability issues in the supply chain were identified.
