While conducting research on their own families in early Illinois newspapers, Mrs. Beals and Mrs. Kirchner realized that others could benefit from the wealth of genealogical material they had discovered. Information on the deceased often includes: date of birth and parents' names; names of surviving spouses, relatives and children; circumstances leading to death, such as disease, accidental injury, murder or execution; criminal records; religious affiliation; place of burial; and assorted anecdotes illustrating the roles of the deceased in their community.
