Specific situations or events may trigger the behaviors of a personality disorder. In general, individuals with personality disorders have difficulty getting along with others and may be irritable, demanding, hostile, fearful, or manipulative. DSM defined personality disorder as "an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviate markedly from the expectations of the individual¿s culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in childhood or early adolescence, and is stable over time which leads to distress or impairment". Borderline personality disorder is a type of personality disorder which is characterized by disturbances in emotional regulation, impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and identity (APA, 2013).The term ¿borderline personality¿ was proposed in the United States by Adolph Stern in 1938. He described a group of patients who ¿fit frankly neither into the psychotic nor into the psychoneurotic group¿ and introduced the term ¿borderline¿ to describe what he observed because it ¿bordered¿ on other conditions.
