The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START III) expires in February 2021. It was concluded in 2010 by Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev for a period of 10 years with the possibility of a five-year extension with the consent of both parties. The parties to START 3 are the U.S. and Russia, but current U.S. President Donald Trump continues to insist that China be included in the new agreement. Moscow has also repeatedly urged Washington to extend the treaty bilaterally, noting that Beijing's participation is unlikely.The future of START 3 remains in great doubt, Moscow has favoured its unconditional extension, START 3 is in the national interest of both countries and is the balance of these interests between the two countries, which is essential in an environment of international turbulence.
