Growing up in the '50s and '60s Jill and Jay explore the era through contrasting perspectives. They are intrinsically different...or are they? Jill's background is working-class Tyneside. Her family life is happy, if dysfunctional. Despite woeful schooling, Jill is a wonderful learner and her intellectual mentors, the 'lit twins', are destined to be a lasting influence. He is touched by Autolycus and becomes a snapper-up of unconsidered trifles in middle-class Lancashire and Norfolk. However, he can be a bit of a jerk, and is full of contradictions. This, and the events that unfold, sequester him from his peers, which Jay relishes! 'Chalk for Cheese' is about two individuals trying to find themselves (and unwittingly one another) in a changing world.
