1885. Lilly first examines the intellectual movement termed Modern Thought and asks if religious faith any longer possible? or has Modern Thought dealt it a fatal blow? He then turns his attention to John Henry Newman's spiritual history and how his experience, unlike that of Schopenhauer, has led him to believe in God.
