Salient Features: ¿ The aim of this manual is to focus on the vaginal hysterectomy. Vaginal hysterectomy is a procedure in which the uterus is surgically removed through the vagina. ¿ One or both ovaries and fallopian tubes may be removed during the procedure as well; removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes is called bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO). ¿ This manual consists of 10 chapters, which covers surgical anatomy of the pelvis, vaginal surgeries in case of previous abdominal surgeries, vaginal surgeries with adnexal pathology, vault prolapse, vesicovaginal fistula, obstetric anal sphincter injury, colpocleisis or Le Fort operation for prolapse, and noninvasive laser treatment with functional electromagnetic stimulation for the restoration of genitourinary health in women. ¿ The advantages of hysterectomy vaginally usually outweigh advantages of alternative methods of hysterectomy. Abdominal hysterectomy in particular invites incisional hernia, more so, in Indian women with poor abdominal wall strength. ¿ Oldest method of access, i.e. vaginal is best method of access to remove uterus whenever possible.
