Dickens' novel was a warning to England's upper class not to underestimate the revolutionary potential of the lower class. Using the French Revolution as an example, Dickens showed how an anti-human class system inevitably leads to its own downfall. Under the impression of the revolutions in Europe and the rise of the communist idea, Dickens put his finger on the wound. For Dickens' contemporaries, the warning was painful.
